Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a transcriptional regulator that plays an important role in the development of diabetic complications through the regulation of its downstream genes. Hyperglycemia makes the cardiovascular system HIF-1α activity is too high, and promote the occurrence and development of cardiovascular complications and proliferative diabetic retinopathy, increase the impact of diabetes mellitus ischemia / reperfusion injury. HIF-1alpha and vascular endothelial growth factor are associated with the degree of diabetic neuropathy. Hyperglycemia, through its alteration of the level and activity of HIF-1α in the kidney and skin, damages the renal adaptive response to hypoxia and retards the process of skin wound healing. HIF-1α has potential clinical significance in the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications.
