This article synthesizes a number of studies comparing the effects of alpha and beta blockers on lipid metabolism in hypertensive patients. Six studies, including 1647 hypertensive patients in six treatment groups, evaluated the effects of propranolol and timolol, a non-selective beta blocker, on blood lipids. The results showed that these drugs reduced HDL-cholesterol levels by 4.5-19.8% (an average reduction of 12.8%) and total serum triglycerides (TG) by 14.7-51.3% (an average increase of 31.2%). Six of the six treatment groups, lipid metabolism was statistically significant (p <0.05), HDL-ch total of 5 groups, TG total of 6 groups.
