The VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) system is likely to be the next hot technology. HP, Intel and Microsoft are developing products based on 64-bit technology and are expected to be successfully developed by 1997. Microsoft is tweaking its new Memphis product development program to add VLIW performance in Memphis as Intel and HP are doing for their 64-bit processors. According to Microsoft sources, Memphis is the next generation of windows that only work on memory. It will work in a 64-bit environment, with its release scheduled after its Cario. Intel-HP processors are expected to be released concurrently with Intel’s P7, which is likely to have a core based on the original HP PA-RISC technology and deliver up to 1 billion instructions per second. It will also support HP’s Unix OS operating system as well as X86 commands, and may also support Memphis.
