As a main producing country of onion(Allium cepa L.),China accounts for 30%of total cultivation acreage and yield of onion in the world.However,the novel onion varieties are seldom released by Chinese breeders,most of them were the hybrids introduced from other countries,directly causing the higher production cost that reduces the economic benefit of farmers.Intensive study on the genetic diversity of onion resources would facilitate the breeding process of onion in China,improving both breeding efficiency and quality.Here we review the research advances in onion genetic diversity from origin and classification,morphological level,cellular level,biochemical level and molecular level,and prospect the breeding of elite novel onion varieties as well.
