French Aerospace will develop a convertible, ready-to-fly universal cockpit, which also includes the use of flat-panel liquid crystal displays. The improved Airbus cockpit will be designed for the A320 / A330 / A340 series and future A3XX and AE31X. Airbus will test the cockpit in early 2000 and put it into operation around 2002. The core of the improvement will be the Air Traffic Services Unit (ATSU), which is the key facility for implementing future air navigation system (FANS) capabilities.
