Objective: To investigate the relationship between carotid intima - media thickness (IMT) and the total number of peripheral white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils and lymphocytes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: 130 T2DM patients were grouped according to carotid intima-media thickness. Logistic analysis was used to analyze age, course of disease, and general clinical data to assess the effect of WBC counts on IMT. Results: With the increase of IMT, the total number of WBC and neutrophil increased, while the number of lymphocytes decreased. After adjusting for age, gender, duration and other risk factors, this difference still exists. CONCLUSIONS: In T2DM patients, the total number of WBCs in the normal range and the number of sorted cells correlated with IMT.
