Nitric oxide is one of the simplest molecules in biology. Despite its structure and simplicity, nitric oxide is currently considered the most important signaling molecule in the body and is vital to the health of the body. Nitric oxide is a strong signaling molecule found in the cardiovascular, nervous and systemic systems. Among the many effects of nitric oxide, vasodilation is most important. Nitric oxide relaxes and dilates blood vessels to ensure adequate blood supply to the heart. Another important role for nitric oxide is to slow the deposition of atherosclerotic plaque in the blood vessel wall. My research strongly suggests that nitric oxide can antagonize the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
