Mixtura Bismuthi Composita is abbreviated as MBC, and a similar preparation abroad is called Tripotassiumdicitrato-bismuthal (referred to as TDB). The curative effect on peptic ulcer has been affirmed at home and abroad. However, whether this agent contains pepsin has an adverse effect on the healing of ulcers is inconclusive. Stephens reports that due to the bismuth effect, the pepsin contained in the formulation has lost its activity. Vantrappen believes that after taking TDR, bismuth in the formulation is chelated with pepsin in the stomach to inactivate pepsin. The aim of this paper is to further elucidate the activity of pepsin in MBC preparations made in our hospital and whether pepsin in the stomach can be inactivated after taking this preparation.
