Alcoa Inc will close the only remaining smelter in Brazil due to its weak energy costs and high energy costs. The smelter was the third to close down in Brazil over the past year, bringing the country’s smelters down from just 6 in 2010 to only two. The closure of the smelter will bring Brazil’s annual production below 900,000 t. Last year Brazil’s aluminum production was 962,000 t, its lowest level since 1990, a 25% drop from 2013 and far below its processing industry demand. The decline in output will increase Brazil’s dependence on imports, potentially boosting the supply of importers in Asia and the Middle East, due to the growth of the large packaging industry
