In the ancient writings of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, there was a special category of characters. They often appear in the form “A + party or knighthood or office name + B ”, which contains two national names in one’s name. Depending on the evidence of the relevant wording, they may be omitted as “AB ”. Among them, A is the father’s clan name, B is the name of the mother’s family. The name of such a person is of revelatory significance to the recognition of the compound name in the Jin-wen of Shang and Zhou dynasties. During the Shang and Zhou dynasties, many of the XY composite names formed by two ethnic names were the same as AB, and were “father’s mother + mother’s daughter.” Variant ABC, named after the person of type AB, is also helpful for recognizing the αβγ-type complex formed by three genera.
