Since 1978, U.S. naval vessels have used heat recover-able couplings (HRC’s) for connecting tubes. In order to meet the required performance requirements, this “shape memory” pipe joint was designed and tested extensively. HRC’S is made of a titanium-nickel alloy called “Tinel” that has the property of “shape memory.” HRC’S design is mainly centered around this feature. This article discusses the design and history of such fittings and the function of shape memory. Then discuss the test performance of the HRC S tube fitting and compare this type of pipe fitting to the commonly used pipe joining techniques. The test proved that, HRC’S pipe joint head overall reliability than the brazed joint or socket welding head.
