INTRODUCTION About 3.5 to 4 billion people in the world are infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV), and chronic hepatitis B has become an important global health care issue [1]. In the United States, the prevalence of HBV infection is lower than in many other countries and about 1.25 million people have been continuously infected with hepatitis B
