Free fatty acids (FFAs) play an important role in the development and progression of type 2 diabetes. Long-term high FFAs can damage pancreatic β-cell function. First, FFAs reduce insulin production by reducing the expression of glucose transporter-2 and glucokinase, the transcriptional disorder of the insulin gene, and the reduction of proinsulin conversion. Second, FFAs can also induce a decrease in the number of cells by inducing islet β-cell apoptosis and inhibiting β-cell mitosis. Studying its mechanism of action is of great significance for clarifying the pathogenesis of diabetes.
