A new type of optical fiber missile (FOG-M) infrared seeker has been presented by Hughes Aircraft Company Missile Systems Division to the United States Army Missile Command. The first infrared imaging seeker for flight inspection by the Army was developed by Hughes in accordance with a subcontract at the Southern Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. This new infrared seeker uses a monolithic platinum silicide hybrid focal plane array sensor with 65,536 miniature infrared detectors to form a 256-in, 256-vertical inlay structure.
