The authors co-infected cells with a vaccinia virus recombinant expressing the retrovirus gag protein and herpes simplex virus (HSV) glycoprotein to produce a virus-like particle pseudotype. This quasi-particle is a novel method for presenting viral glycoprotein antigens in a noninfectious, particulate state that mimics the native antigen-presenting process. The entire 4800 base pairs (bp) of the gag-pol region of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVmac251) was inserted into plasmid pAbT4587 to obtain pAbT4660 and 1400 bp of the complete sequence of the gD gene containing type 2 HSV glycoprotein
