本文对３０例６０岁以上原发性高血压与３０例６０岁以下原发性高血压患者的心脏结构改变进行分析，发现老年高血压性心脏改变的早期征象是左房增大，并随左室肥厚和扩张的出现而加重，与左室顺应性降低有关。两组对照无明显差异，但均符合随年龄增加及高血压病引起的进行性心脏受累而显示由正常心脏──左房增大──左室肥厚──左室衰竭这个规律，超声心动图也是检测高血压性心脏病和长期追踪心脏病变进展的重要手段。
