Back from Paris to Seek Roots in Ningbo
Story and Photographs by Bao Danhong
One weekend early this year, my husband and my daughter spent weekend at a holiday resort near Dongqian Lake near Ningbo. During a lakeside stroll, they met an artist sketching on the picturesque lake. They brought me a name card to testify one of their adventures at the resort. I examined the card. Touched by the artistic elegance of the name card, I wondered whether the name Fang Shicong would point to a wonderful art career. I searched online for information on the artist. My instinct was confirmed.
Yes, indeed, he is a well established artist of world renown.
An oil painting major from Shanghai Arts School, Fang used to be director of research office at the fine arts department of Shanghai Theater School and president of Shanghai Huangpu Art Academy. In 1982, his work won a special award at Modern Paintings of China held in New York. He published an album of his oil painting masterpieces in 1986, a rare phenomenon for a mid-aged artist in China at that time. In 1987, he left behind his reputation in Shanghai and went to France. The 18 years in Paris have uplifted his arts into a much higher degree of professional proficiency. He has held 18 one-man exhibitions and 12 joint shows in Paris. One of his portraits went into Prince Charles’s personal art collection.
Going through Fang’s profile, my first reaction was that the 1990, 1998 collections of paintings by artists with their family roots in Zhenhai, Ningbo missed out on Fang’s works. That night I dialed Fang’s mobile phone. We talked and agreed to meet the next day at the holiday hotel in the lake resort.
In a gray jacket, Fang was tall with heavy whiskers. He looked very natural, free and easy. He was exactly what I think an artist should look like. My deepest impression of him was his tender but keen eyes. We sat down in bamboo chairs under the eave. In the cozy sunshine, over a cup of green tea, I learned more about his earlier life and his career in Paris.
Born in Shanghai in 1941, his father was a senior white-collar clerk specialized in French translation in the metropolitan city. His father died of typhoid when Fang Shicong was 5 years old.The mother brought the two sons up. At age 14, Fang entered the Datong Middle School in Shanghai, where he met Zhang Wenqi, a teacher of art. This turned out to be a turning point of his life. Those who qualified for elite art studies at the school must be A1 students. Fang was excellent enough to take vigorous training under the guidance of the demanding art instructor. In 1960, Fang was recommended for admission to Shanghai Arts School where he studied under a few famed artists.
Fang’s name spread far after his collected works were published in 1986. Next year, he was invited to Paris for further studies. As many accomplished Chinese oil masters had been in Paris, Paris is like Mecca to young Chinese artists. The trip to Paris is another turning point in Fang’s life.
But it is not all roses in Paris where world-class masters aggregate. His life there was simple and tough. Success is hard to come by. His 60-m2 studio/apartment was in a deserted factory on the Seine River in the southern suburb of Paris. He spent years there exploring his way to the highest honor.
In 1992, he came out number one in a highly competitive contest. His sketches of 11 French literary masters were selected by the French Postal Office. Fang’s success drew favorable reviews in the most prestigious newspaper in the country. This win opened the door for Fang to the art world. So far, the artist from Shanghai has won awards at various exhibitions in America, France and Great Britain. And many of his masterpieces have been in world-class collections.
For the convenience of life and participation in important art exhibitions, Fang Shicong is now a French citizen. But his Chinese heart still throbs. In 2000, after 13 years in Paris, the artist held an exhibition in Shanghai. It was a sensational success. In 2004, over 60 of his best oils were on a retrospection exhibition at the Gallery of Shanghai Grand Theater. In the same year, his works were exhibited at the West Lake Expo in Hangzhou.
Though his father was from Zhenhai, Fang had never visited his Ningbo roots till 2004. Last year, he and his elder brother, and their families followed an 80-year-old uncle to Zhenhai. And Fang is now thinking of holding a one-man show at Ningbo. Fang is also willing to cultivate talents for China.
After the conversation, I watched Fang do a painting. It was on a piece of Chinese rice paper. He applied western oils to the paper. A lawn, young trees, an old house appeared. He applied the pigments heartily. The whole scene overflowed with verdant spring tints. I observed, “It is still winter now.”Fang did not stop applying thick oils to the paper while answering, “his part of the Yangtze River Delta is always spring in my heart.”
