People joke that no one in Los Angeles reads; everyone watches TV, rents videos, or goes to the movies. The most popular reading material is comic books, movie magazines, and TV guides. City libraries have only 10 percent of the traffic that car washes have. But how do you explain this? An annual book festival in west Los Angeles is “sold out” year after year. People wait half an hour for a parking space to become available.
This outdoor festival, sponsored by a newspaper, occurs every April for one weekend. This year’s attendance was estimated at 70,000 on Saturday and 75,000 on Sunday. The festival featured 280 exhibitors. There were about 90 talks given by authors, with an audience question-and-answer period following each talk. Autograph(亲笔签名) seekers sought out more than 150 authors. A food court sold all kinds of popular and ethnic foods, from American hamburgers to Hawaiian shave ice drinks. Except for a $7 parking fee, the festival was free. Even so, some people avoided the food court prices by sneaking (潜行) in their own sandwiches and drinks.
People came from all over California. One couple drove down from San Francisco. “This is our sixth year here now. We love it,” said the husband. “It’s just fantastic to be in the great outdoors, to be among so many books and authors, and to get some very good deals, too.”
The idea for the festival occurred years ago, but nobody knew if it would succeed. Although book festivals were already popular in other US cities, would Los Angeles residents embrace one? “Angelenos are very unpredictable,” said one of the festival founders.
  51. Which of the following about the book festival is true?
  A. It happens every April for one week.

Surfing the Internet, playing games and hanging out on social networks are important for teen development, a large study of online use has revealed(揭示). The report counters the stereotypical view held by many parents and teachers that such activity is a waste of time.
More than 800 teenagers and parents took part in the three-year US project. “They are learning the technological skills and literacy (能力) needed for the contemporary world,” said the report’s author, Dr Mimi Ito. “They are learning how to communicate online, craft (制作) a public identity, create a home page, and post links.” All these things were regarded as sophisticated (复杂,精密的) 10 years ago but young people today take them for granted,” Dr Ito told the BBC.
The study, sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation, was part of a $50m (£31m) project on digital media and learning. Over the period of the study, researchers observed users for more than 5,000 hours. The aim of the Digital Youth Project was to provide an view of how children use social media to socialise, learn and relax.
Dr Ito said that connecting online with friends via social networks such as MySpace and Facebook was where teens now “hang out”, compared to the usual public places like shopping malls, the street and parks. She also said the Internet provided a core (核心) group of teens the opportunity to explore their own creativity and “take a deep dive into a subject”.
As for parents and teachers, she urged them to get up to speed with what children are doing on the Internet, as the rapid pace of change presents challenges ranging from stranger danger to teenagers spending too long online.
“While most parents know very little about what their kids are doing online, they are struggling to give real guidance and help. At the more social ‘hanging out’ layer, young people don’t want their parents or teachers on their MySpace or Facebook page. But in the interest-driven side, there is a more productive role for parents and teachers to play that will help them connect with kids and their lives,” said Dr Ito.
The MacArthur Foundation’s education director, Connie Yowell, concluded that the work creates a new way to look at how young people are being taught.

  D. Using social media to socialise, learn and relax needs reconsidering by parents.

Strategies or tactics (策略) are ways and methods of doing things and advertisement promotion strategies will vary according to the product. Obviously, the promotion of a new make of car will be different from basic food products under a new brand label. Ordinary people seldom buy a new car but food is a daily necessary.
One approach to sell food under a new brand name might be to make the packaging as similar as is legally possible to that of a well-known brand leader and, in fact, imitate(模仿) it. Of course the packaging would have to be slightly different or the other company could take you to court and bring a case against you for stealing their label. The customer could easily pick up the product under the new label by mistake and perhaps think the contents of two bottles are the same but one has a cheaper price label and that they will be saving money if they buy that one.
Another tactic might be more honest and utilitarian (i.e. more basic and useful) and that is to sell the product in very plain packaging, simple lettering and no “frills”—nothing extra to make the packaging attractive to look at. The company then hopes to sell the product because of their honesty. The public buy it because of its basic goodness and quality and think they are getting exceptional value (超值) for money without paying for extra packaging and frills.
A third strategy might be to widen the scale of the utilitarian(功利主义的) tactic and compete very obviously and directly—a “head-on” approach. You make the packaging look attractive in its own right and give it a very clear identity of its own so that there is no possibility of mistaking it for another brand. If you were selling coffee, for example, you might change the shape of the jar so that it looked very different from a Nestcafe jar, and have quite different colors on the label. The last approach is possibly the most difficult one, but if the company gets the packaging right first time, it is the best one in the long run.
  59. What is obviously different about buying a car and buying a bag of rice?
  A. Food is people’s basic need of every-day life while a car is not.
  B. Buying a car costs people much morethan buying a bag of rice.
  C. Using a car asks for knowledge andskills while eating food does not.
  D. A bag of rice can satisfy much more people than a car.
  60. According to the passage, one company____________.
  A. should always avoid making the sameproduct as that other companies have already made
  B. will surely get into trouble if its prod-ucts have the same name as that of others
  C. may produce the same product as oth-ers but it must have completely different packaging
  D. is allowed to make products of the same name but not the completely same packaging
  61. Customers would like to buy products that are sold under the no-frill (低成本的) approach because ____________ .
  A. these products always bear high quality
  B. they think they would get real value they need
  C. these products are often at low price
  D. they think the company are honest
enough not to make profit from them
  62. The main point of a head-on approach is____________.
  A. to make the most of all attractive packaging look
  B. to make your product one that no oneelse can make
  C. to make your product unique and declare its first right
  D. to make the best of your product andmake it different from others

As a kid, I can remember going to the supermarket and grabbing any random cardboard carton of eggs off the shelf. I would run them home(top speed!) to my mother because they were usually going into a delicious coffee cake or batch of corn bread. Times have changed. Cage-free? Organic? Brown? White? Omega-3s? Help! Here are some tips to help you figure out which eggs you should be eating:
◇Brown or white? In actuality, color is simply an indication of the breed (品种) of hen. Find the freshest egg with the most flavor and let color be a secondary concern.
◇Extra Omega-3s? Omega-3 eggs come from a hen whose diet has added flaxseed (亚麻籽), which yields an egg containing an average of 225 mg of Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. The countless health benefits for humans make these eggs a tempting purchase. My opinion? Eat a piece of fresh fish — salmon or sardines or Atlantic mackerel, for example — and get a pure dose of Omega-3’s. Let eggs be eggs.
◇Does your egg need exercise? Cage-free and free-range eggs are from hens raised without the confines (限制) of a cage, though they may or may not have spent much time outdoors. Organic eggs are from hens that are raised with the most holistic (全面的) approach: their feed must meet organic standards, they must be raised humanely (人道地) and sustainably, and they must be given access to the outdoors. Hey, happier hens do lay tastier eggs.
◇Does local make a difference? Nothing is better than local eggs. They may have a feather or two stuck to them or a slightly imperfect shape and they may or may not be certified organic; however, they have one quality I prize: I know exactly where my food came from and how it came to be! In some cases I can even ask the farmer when the eggs were laid and what they were fed. At $2.20 for a dozen large eggs and all the information I could want about my food, I call it a bargain! I refrigerate the eggs the minute I return from the market.
  63. The author seems to think highly of the local eggs just for their ____________ .
  A. colour B. shape C. exercise D. quality
  64. What’s the author’s attitude towards Omega-3s?
  A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
  65. The underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mostly means____________.
  A. colour really matters a lot B. colour isn’t so important
  C. colour is as important as its’ flavour D. colour is less important than its’
  flavour
  66. In which book can you probably find thearticle?
  A. Shopping skills B. Cooking
  C. Healthy diet D. Hens raising

Global warming will cause sea levels to rise up to 34 centimeters by the end of the century, causing more flooding and coastal erosion(侵蚀), according to a new study by Australian researchers.
The study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, said that global warming was expected to further heat up the world’s oceans and cause glaciers(冰川) in the Himalayas and ice sheets in Greenland to melt.
The study estimated that sea levels would rise between 28 centimeters and 34 centimeters by 2100.
“What we found is that sea levels are rising slowly over time,” said John Church, a co-author of the study by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, the Australian government’s main research body.
“It means there will be more flooding in lower areas,” he said. “It means more coastal erosion on sandy beaches. We’re also going to see more flooding on island nations.”
Most scientists believe greenhouse gases from human activities such as coal-burning power plants cause global warming by holding the sun’s heat in the atmosphere.
“Greenhouse gas emissions(排放) should be reduced by 50 percent by 2050,” Church said.
“If not, climate change will continue and increase,” he said. “I think governments around the world, including Australia, have started the process, but there is a long way to go and I would argue that it’s urgent.”
Clive Wilkinson, an expert of the Global Coral Reef(珊瑚礁) Monitoring Network, a non-government group that closely follows developments on rising seas, said the findings were the same as what many scientists had predicted about global warming.
“It fits a pattern that everyone is coming up with,” Wilkinson said. “It means that we are in real trouble. If you add another meter over the coral reefs, they won’t notice it. But the rising water will flood the lower areas. People won’t be able to live on some coral islands like Tuvalu, Maldives, and Kiribati.”
By examining tidal(潮汐的) data. Church said that sea levels rose by 19.5 centimeters between 1870 and 2008.
Many island nations are already feeling the effects of rising seas. In Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea in the Southwest Pacific, increased sea levels have forced hundreds of islanders to leave their coastal homes for higher ground, according to the United Nations and news reports.
“We do have to reduce air pollution, but we also have to recognize that climate changes are happening, and we have to adapt as well,” Church said.
  67. What’s the direct cause of the rising of sea levels?
  A. Flood. B. Coastal erosion.
  C. Glaciers. D. High temperature around the world.
  68. According to John Church,____________ .
  A. the speed of sea level rising is faster than ever before
  B. there will be more floods all over the world
  C. island nations will suffer from flood more frequently
  D. coastal erosion will not cause more sandy beaches
  69. Clive Wilkinson’s conclusion may bebased on ____________.
  A. many people’s opinions about global warming
  B. the fact that many island people have moved away from their living places
  C. what scientists had once predicted about climate change
  D. his observation about coral reef in the Southwest Pacific
  70. It can be inferred from the passage that____________.
  A. the author holds an optimistic attitude to global warming and the rising seas
  B. global warming now is not serious enough to attract governments’ attention
  C. Church has always had debates aboutglobal warming with government officials
  D. tide offers the information to peoplethat the sea level is on the rise all theway
