A compound (NH_ 3 CH_ 2 CH_ 2 NH_ 3 )HgSnS_ 4 with a column structure was synthesized solvothermally and characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a=1.3863(6) nm, b=0.6640(3) nm, c=2.3198(10) nm, β=106.168(7)° and Z=8. It consists of anionic columns of HgSnS_ 4 ~ 2- _ ∞ that are interrupted by cationic columns of EnH_ 2 ~ 2+ . Its thermal and optical properties were studied.
