Roger Fowler is a professor of English and linguistics at the University of East Anglia in the UK and has published 11 monographs on literature and linguistics. Here we translate “An Introduction to Linguistic Criticism” from his latest monograph “Linguistic Criticism,” published by the Oxford University Press. As one of the influential Western literary criticisms in the twentieth century, “linguistic criticism” is always associated with the names of Babson and Richards. However, their research focuses more on the literary works Meaning, that is, emphasis on the objective aspects of words. Roger Fowler believes that linguistic criticism can not stop at this level, but should be related to the historical background and social relations that result from words. Therefore, he places linguistic criticism on the basis of pragmatics, The relationship between language and user. Roger Fowler’s critical research provides us with a new perspective that may inspire us.
