Digest Family Inheritage review
by Huaijin Nan
In the winter of 2009, the internationally known architect Yao Renxi together with his wife Xiangsheng Ren came to me and he met his friend Deng Kunyan who was also a famous architect around the world by accident. The two had a nice talk about the modern civilization and things about architecture. At this moment, Ren Xiang took out her draft of 《Family Inheritage》 and asked for some advice from her teacher modestly. She also said that she didn’t waste her life these years and she really wanted to do something to contribute to the development of social civilization and Chinese culture.
I read the book and felt surprised. Nowadays, most people thought that there are serious problems about our social morality. The lifestyle of Chinese people was now experiencing the huge transaction and no one could tell which direction was the right one. Ren was a girl from respectable family and her parents, both of whom were famous in Taiwan, were my old friends. She paid great attention on the society development and wrote the book with the intention to protect the traditional culture, the customs of Chinese people’s life as well as inspire the young to know about the history and future, which was quite precious. She was grown up after the middle of the twentieth century in Taiwan and experienced the great change of the society and lots of cultural shocks.
Taiwan is known as Treasure Island, which in my mind when I was young, it was just famous overseas mountain and the fairy islands of Penglai, which was elusive. In the seventeenth century, the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties in China, under Chenggong Zheng''s leadership, many elites in China and those who didn''t want to surrender to Qing went to Taiwan and Penghu. Therefore, over two hundred years, it retained Chinese traditional culture and customs. By the mid-20th century, unprecedented turmoil arose in China, generating the migration of many cultural elites and all walks of Chinese people to Taiwan and Penghu, which is another flow of Chinese culture to Taiwan. Thanks to these two cultural flows, Taiwan is capable of being the representative of Chinese
Xiangsheng Ren is really admirable, as he was not eager to pursue money and social status at this time, but did great things which are vital to the Chinese people’s livehood, but were often ignored. That’s why I am glad to introduce him herein.
