对含有稀有元素的矿床进行调查研究的最终目的,是要作出该矿床的远景评价或工业评价。根据稀有元素在自然界的赋存情况,一般将稀有元素划分成下面两大类: 1.能够形成独立矿床的稀有元素,如Be,Li,Nb,Ta,Zr,TR,U,Th……等,其矿床如花岗伟晶岩型的铍矿床、钽矿床、砂矿型的锆英石(Zr)砂矿及独居石砂矿(TR Th)。 2.不能形成自己的独立矿床而是在开拓其它金属矿床时顺便提取和利用的(被称为分散元素的);如Ge,Ga,In,Tl,Cd,Re,Se,Te……等,如铝土矿
