The effect of high yield pulp (HYP) replacement bleached Kraft hardwood pulp (HBKP) on low basis weight paper properties such as base paper, coated paper and calendered paper was investigated. The experimental results are divided into two parts. Part 1 focuses on the potential impact of HYP over HBKP on base paper performance. The experimental results show that HYP replaces HBKP to increase the paper bulk, but this does not reduce the roughness and air resistance. Although HYP alone had a lower strength than HBKP, the partial replacement of HBKP by HYP did improve the tensile strength of low basis weight paper, suggesting a synergistic effect between HYP and kraft pulp. This theory can be explained by the increased binding capacity of the internal fibers. The replacement of HBKP by HYP has a positive effect on the bending stiffness, internal bond strength, modulus of elasticity and evenness. No significant effect on other properties such as tear index, burst index, endurance, dimensional stability, elongation and tensile energy absorption. These experimental results show that the use of HYP instead of HBKP to produce groundwood-free low basis weight paper is technically feasible at a 30% replacement level and is good for base paper production.
