Cadmium is a silvery white heavy metal, insoluble in water, soluble in ammonium hydroxide, nitric acid and hot sulfuric acid. During the heat treatment of cadmium, the released cadmium smoke rapidly converts into fine cadmium oxide aerosols in the air. Cadmium is widely used in electroplating, chemical, electronics and nuclear industries. Since 1955, when the well-known pain disease (also known as osteopathy) occurred in Shen Tong Chuan, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, cadmium pollution and its prevention and control have drawn great attention of all countries in the world.
