The mobile phone network in Europe and most of the Asia Pacific region is a protocol defined by the GSM standard (Global System for Mobile Communications, standardized by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)). GSM is a circuit switched technology and is quite slow (14.4Kbps). Therefore, the security of the GSM system is very important for mobile network security in Europe and most of the Asia-Pacific region. Many of the techniques that can be used to cheat on traditional telecommunications networks are equally applicable to GSM mobile networks. The GSM system must support international roaming and interoperability with other operators, which also brings some opportunities for attacks. GSM
