理雅各1885年《礼记》英译本是迄今发现最早的欧语系统全译本,本文对其《序言》作全面整理及研究。理雅各首先简述译经的缘起,评价前人译本的得失;其次介绍自己所用底本的优长,既有权威注疏,又汇诸家之说;再次对“三礼”成书过程逐一梳理,尤其对《礼记》的文献来源、编纂、流传,《大戴礼记》的命运、《小戴礼记》的地位等详细论述,并提及欧洲学者对《周礼》和《礼记》的译介情形,对汉籍外译和汉学研究具有很高的文献价值。本文旨在展现理雅各对中国礼学的接受,并对其中存在的理解失误逐一作学术探讨。
The English translation of The Book of Rites by James Legge in 1885 is by far the earliest found translation of the European system, and the full translation and study of the Preface is made in this paper. James first briefed the origin of translation, evaluation of the pros and cons of predecessors translation; followed by introduction of their own use of the excellent long, both the authoritative note, but also all the way to say; once again Combing and discussing in detail the sources, compilation and circulation of the sources of the Book of Rites, the fate of the Dahili Book of Rites and the status of the book “The Book of Rites” It is of high value to Chinese translation and Sinology. The purpose of this article is to show how James Jacobs accepts rituals in China and makes academic discussions on the misunderstandings existing therein.
