云南新平大红山型铜铁矿床的发现,被为誉我国古海相火山岩型铜铁矿床的一个新突破,并引起了全国地学界的注目,成为了1974年在昆明召开的“全国火山岩地区铁铜矿工作经验交流会”的中心议题之一。对该矿区含矿岩系的认识,初期被称为海相变质富钠质火山岩,随着研究的深入和资料的积累,被进一步确定为海相细碧——角斑岩系,认为大红山是由一个包括集块岩、火山角砾岩、凝灰岩、枕状熔岩和熔岩等组成的完整的古火山机构,各种类型矿床围绕喷发中心展布,配套出现,构成了古海底火山喷发成矿系列,并逐步地建立起一个大红山式的成岩成矿模式。
