《永乐大典戏文三种》是现存最早的南戏剧本,是考查南曲套式历史形态的重要文献。《张协状元》主要采用孤牌自套,表明早期戏文作家还没有形成组套的自觉意识;本套和复套数量极少,也处于自然形态,但暗合了后世联套的基本要素。《错立身》、《小孙屠》中自套明显减少,本套和复套明显增加,类型更为丰富,说明此时作者的组套意识已显著增强;南曲的组套在自身缓慢发展过程中,由于北套和南北合套的引入,明显提升了组套的水平和层次。北曲最早以套曲形态进入戏文,是经过模仿改造、逐渐“南化”的北套。“戏文三种”的组套形态虽然表现出民间形态的不成熟性,具有区别于北套的特殊性,但已基本具备了后世自套、本套、复套、南北合套四种南套的基本形态。
