The treatment of roofing as a subterranean space for different siting issues is also a distinctive feature of Allen’s design of public schools. Located in the Moffitt Elementary School in Lenox, California, its site is very narrow and strictly limited, and it is just below the plane at Los Angeles International Airport. In order to eliminate the deafening jet noise and provide the necessary parking areas, the roof of the school building is paved with concrete for slope protection. The centerpiece of student activity is an important design element, which consists of a large ladder that extends from the top down to the parking lot. The thick triangular concrete frame grid at the entrance shows a strong styling effect. It supports the concrete roof and reduces noise intrusion into the indoor environment.
