Ferroptosis is a novel form of cell death that is mediated by the accumulation of iron-dependent lipid peroxidation that leads to cell death. Ferroptosis occurred in the cell morphology, genetics, biochemical characteristics and the traditional way of cell death are significantly different. Ferroptosis has been found to be involved in many human disease processes, especially in liver diseases. Therefore, the study of inhibitors or activators of ferroptosis will provide important drug treatment strategies for the prevention and treatment of these diseases. This review summarizes the biological characteristics of ferroptosis and the regulation of signaling pathways, as well as the relationship between ferroptosis and liver diseases and provides a theoretical basis for exploring new therapeutic approaches for liver diseases.
