The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission is the body set up by the U.S. Congress to fill the vacancy caused by China’s permanent and most-favored-nation status after a comprehensive review of U.S. channels of China’s policy. Since it was established in October 2000, it has held various kinds of hearings or conducted field research frequently, and its pro-Taiwan anti-China stance is very clear. On July 15, 2002, the commission released its first annual report, vigorously rendering the threat to China and calling for a tougher China policy. Since then, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission has released an annual summary report each year that strongly advocates the “China threat theory,” a tone that is full of the Cold War mentality. This section is translated from the 2006 Annual Summary Report of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, with abridged versions, headlines and section headings added to by editors.
