According to a note from a group of scientists at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, most of the Arctic stratosphere and north-central latitudes could have the harbinger of extreme ozone depletion. Chemical reactions convert chlorine-containing compounds such as hydrogen chloride to more reactive elements such as chlorine monoxide. These chemical reactions occur on the surface of the particles in the stratospheric clouds that only form when the stratospheric temperature is below -108F. The three-dimensional Earth model includes the chemical reaction effects that occur with the transport process effects that accompany the stratospheric wind system. They enable the Goddard team to simulate the distribution of hydrogen chloride in the stratosphere on Earth. by
