差异教学这一概念的提出是2003年美国学者汤姆林森(Carol Ann Tomlinson)在著作《多元能力课堂中的差异教学》一书,书中针对当前美国课堂中,学生的差异日趋明显和分化这一现象以及各个年级的教师所面对的多元能力课堂中学生的学习差异,提出了差异教学的实施策略,来帮助教师了解学生在学习风格、兴趣和准备水平上的差异,并在此基础上协助教师明确了差异教学的性质、基本理论与实践工作,从而帮助教师能自如面对多元能力课堂以及顺利开展差异教学工作。
