在漫漫戈壁茫茫瀚海中耸立了1600多年的敦煌莫高窟,自其开窟之后,就一直受到风沙的侵扰。尤其是敦煌莫高窟经卷被世人发现后,不但遭受着斯坦因、伯希和、华尔纳等西方强盗的劫掠,而且由于自然生态环境的日益恶化,风沙已经对敦煌莫高窟及其文物的保护构成了严重的威胁。莫高窟的风沙危害一直是国内外关注的热点,早在20世纪60年代,风沙对莫高窟的危害就引起国家领导人及有关科学工作者的极大关注,周恩来总理生前对莫高窟文物保护和防沙特别重视。曾经游览过莫高窟的游客们,在离开莫高窟之际,再回头眺望莫高窟窟顶及四周漫漫的沙漠世界,无不忧虑:在这风沙越来越肆虐的地方,莫高窟还能完整无损地一直存在下去吗?
