Objective: To study the effects of exogenous gangliosides (GM1) on learning and memory impairment induced by lead in rats. Methods: Healthy 2-month-old SD rats were drank 0.1% lead acetate in deionized water to make chronic lead-induced rat model. After 2 months, the rats were injected intraperitoneally with GM10, 50, 100 and 200 mg.kg-1, and the rats in each group (n = 15) were administered Y-maze for 7, 14 and 21 d . Results: Compared with normal control group, the learning and memory abilities of rats in lead-induced model group were significantly decreased. The learning and memory abilities of GM1 group were improved dose-dependently and time-dependently. Conclusion: GM1 can improve the learning and memory abilities of lead-exposed rats to some extent, and this protective effect is more obvious with the increase of GM1 injection dose and the prolongation of time.
