In late March, Chinas Finance Ministry and State Administrative of Taxation jointly announced the largest adjustment of its consumption tax system since 1994. The new policy, issued against a background of domestic energy shortages and the widening income gap, reflects the govements intention to direct local consumption towards a more environment-friendly objective and narrow wealth inequality.
