This article criticizes the absolute view of absolutism and relativism in the sense of meaning that the former leads to the mechanics of understanding while the latter leads to the relativity of understanding, both of which are detrimental to translation studies. At the same time, the author points out that the key point of Habermas’s double transcendence on this issue lies in his double division of understanding structure, that is, to place understanding activities in the level of interaction and language respectively so as to lead the understanding of language to social interaction practice. The author believes that this view of understanding is what translation studies should take.
