福建是我国著名的侨乡,早在鸦片战争以前,许多福建人就远走南洋,在马六甲、新加坡、巴达维亚等地谋生。1814年,当嘉庆帝颁布“禁止西人传教,查出论死,入教者发极边”的禁教令后,早期东来传教士失去了在中国本土传教的活动空间,福建侨民众多的南洋便成为他们的主要活动地区。鸦片战争后,福州、厦门被定为通商口岸,在中国传教的禁令也已被废止,
