明清以来,文人画愈演愈烈,大量“以书作画”的文人不求“形似”只为传达心中“意韵”的绘画追求,整个画坛充斥着平庸的画作,同时摹古之风盛行。就在这样的时代背景下居巢居廉没有为流风所牵制,受清代初期恽寿平的影响,结合自己身处岭南乡土田园之间,提出“宋人骨法元人韵”的道路并付诸实践,实现了第一次将中国画的工笔与写意相融合,采工笔写意之长,以写生为基础,描绘岭南乡土田园间的花卉虫草,找到了表现岭南特色的契合点。
