Claude Simon, the French novelist, won the 1985 Nobel Prize in Literature, making it the first French writer to win the highest honor in the literary world since Jean-Paul Sartre in 1964. According to the Swedish Academy of Sciences, Simon Simone, 72, “combined the poet’s and painter’s creativity with a deepening background in the description of the human condition.” Russ Kilenstein, the permanent secretary of the Academy of Sciences, announced the award in four languages in the eighteenth-century stone building where the Academy and the Stock Exchange are located.
