作为现代设计发展的基础学科,平面设计专业有着悠久的历史和传统,然而无论是哪个时代的平面设计师都不得不面临一个窘境,即其存在往往需要依附于其他载体,而缺乏独立的价值。无论是公司标志设计、产品包装设计、广告设计,甚至是书籍或杂志的设计,都需要听从于委托人或第三方的意愿,好的平面设计可以为好产品的销售锦上添花,却很难改变一个坏产品的命运。从当年包豪斯教学的架构中可以看出平面设计仅处于学科边缘的位置,中心则是被建筑与产品设计所占据。而在当下这一强调社会产业结构创新、多元化的大环境中,传统的广告及出版产业都受到很大的冲击,同样平面设计师也需要在其中寻求自身的转型,如何利用平面设计专业的自身优势介入到社会活动中,如何使用平面设计创造具有独立价值的产品,是当下平面设计师所面临的问题。
