Based on its contract with the U.S. Naval Research Agency, the U.S. Cayman Company developed and tested a “Shipborne Tethered Flight Platform” (STAPL). In 1970, the initial design of the system was completed as required by the contract, followed by the manufacture of two prototypes (the second one was improved on the first one). In 1974, two prototypes began prototypes, prototype takeoffs, recovery platforms and control systems for non-flight tests. These tests have not been completed until 1975.
