Every country has its heroes. They may be soldiers or sports people, doctors or film stars. We admire them for their courage, their strength, or their devotion to duty. Their examples inspire us to live better, to work harder.
Terry Fox was a young student who loved life. He was a sport fan. When he was just 18 years old, a terrible event occurred: his right leg had to be cut off because of cancer. Such an experience would have destroyed a weaker person—but Terry Fox was a fighter. He refused to give up. Instead, while he was recovering from the operation, an idea slowly formed in his mind. He decided he would run across Canada, in order to raise money for cancer research.
Slowly and carefully, he began to train. Every step was extremely painful, but he insisted on increasing the distance covered day by day. Sixteen months later, in the spring of 1980, he was ready for the long journey across Canada—his Marathon of hope. It was a time of inspiration and heart-breaking emotion. Through television, every home saw his particular way of running, a kind of half hop and half-run. Thousands of people lined the route to encourage him and to wish him well. They also gave money to fight cancer. Then, on September 1st, 1980, after 143 days and more than 5,000 kilometers completed, everything came to an end. Terry had to stop. He lived on for another nine months and died on June the 18th, 1981. he was almost 23.

The following is a sort of greeting when it is said to a stranger: ‘Ooh , isn’t it cold ?’ Failure to give a proper answer is breaking the etiquette(礼仪) slightly. Possible answers are ‘Mm, yes, isn’t it?’ or ‘Mmm, very cold.’ Failure to agree in this manner is breaking the etiquette seriously. In England you must never be against anybody when discussing the weather. Disagreements such as ‘No, actually, it’s quite cold’ are extremely rare, almost unheard of.
If you break the rule, there may be an uncomfortable silence, then someone may say, in angry tones, ‘Well, it feels cold to me,’ or ‘Really? Do you think so?’—or, most likely, they will either change the subject or continue talking about the weather among themselves, politely, ignoring you. Among highly polite people, the response to your ‘No, actually, it’s quite mild’ might be, after a slightly embarrassed pause, ‘Oh, perhaps you don’t feel the cold—you know, my husband is like that: he always thinks it’s mild when I’m shivering and complaining. Maybe women feel the cold more than men, do you think?’
An appropriate response to ‘Ooh, isn’t it cold?’ if you find you really can’t simply agree, would be: ‘Yes, but I really rather like this sort of weather—quite good, don’t you think?’ or ‘Yes, but you know I don’t tend to notice the cold much—this feels quite warm to me.’ If you truly can’t bring yourself to start with the common word ‘Yes,’ this may be replaced by a positive—sounding ‘Mmm’ accompanied by a nod—still an expression of agreement. You can also respond with ‘Yes , but at least it’s not raining.’
There is an unofficial English weather hierarchy(等级体系) to which almost everyone agrees. From best to worst , the hierarchy is as follows:
  sunny and warm / mild
  sunny and cool / cold
  cloudy and warm / mild
  cloudy and cool / cold
  rainy and warm / mild
  rainy and cool / cold

Russian President Vladimir Putin has explained why he stopped to kiss a small boy on the stomach as he was walking through the Kremlin, saying it was a spontaneous(本能的) action like touching a cat.
“It was an unplanned meeting—people just came up and started talking to me,” Putin said, recalling the June 28 incident when he met the boy, Nikita, among a group of tourists, lifted the boy’s shirt and planted a kiss on his stomach.
“He seemed very independent and serious. At the same time, a child is always defenceless and nice. I wanted to touch him like a cat and it came out in this action. There was nothing behind it,” Putin said in an Internet question and answer meeting with Russian and foreign audiences.

If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky.
If you say to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but ...”, what follows that “but” can make the apology ineffective: “I had a bad day” or “your noise was giving me a headache” leaves the child who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior.
Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I’m sorry you’re upset”; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.
These false apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not turn to these false apologies.
But even when presented with examples of true regret, children still need help to become aware of how difficult it is to say sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that taking away the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing parents’ clothes without permission is not.
  58. If a mother adds “but” to an apology, ______.
  A. the child may find the apology easier to accept
  B. the child may feel that he should apologize to his mother
  C. she does not realize that the child has been hurt
  D. she doesn’t feel that she should have apologized
  59. According to the author, saying “I’m sorry you’re upset.” most probably means “______”.
  A. You have good reason to get upset
  B. I apologize for hurting your feelings
  C. I’m wrong for making you upset
  D. I know you’re upset, but I’m not to blame
  60. We learn from the last paragraph that in teaching children to say sorry______.
  A. their ages should be taken into consideration
  B. parents should be patient
  C. parents need to set them a good example
  D. the difficulties involved should be taken no notice of

Miss Wenter was watching TV when the program suddenly stopped. “Sorry to interrupt the program. Now we are requested to broadcast an important notice from the police station. At about nine this evening, a lady named Mrs. Humney was robbed and killed. Anyone who can supply any clue is requested to report to the police, thank you.” The terrible news made the lonely girl shake with fear. She couldn’t help looking around, but she didn’t notice that a man was already hidden behind the door to the veranda(阳台).
All of a sudden the man appeared before Miss Wenter. The girl really didn’t know what to do. “Don’t ask for trouble, just put your jewellery on the table, then think over whether I shall be safe to stay up here for the night,” said the robber. That made Miss Wenter even more terrified, but she tried to calm herself.
Just then came the whistle of a police car. In a little while, someone rang the doorbell. The robber said with a gun against the girl’s back, “Go to the door and say that you’ve gone to bed. Never let him in.”
In a flash, the girl had an idea. “Oh, who are you?” she said. “Is there anything unusual?” asked the policeman. “No, there isn’t. Good night!” Immediately she added loudly, “Besides, my elder brother extends his warm greeting to you.” “Thank you. Good night,” the policeman replied in the same manner.
A few minutes later the sound of the police car going away could be heard. “It’s well done,” the robber said with a smile. Then he rushed to the girl. Almost at the same time the glass on the window was broken. The policemen hurried into the room from the veranda. They quickly put handcuffs(手铐) on the robber.
