Understanding the transformation of steel from liquid to solid state is the most fundamental aspect of continuous casting, however, it is still a complex problem that many problems remain unresolved. The formation of subcutaneous defects caused by mold operation is discussed, including the solidification of molten steel at meniscus, the change of surface energy and interfacial energy, the influence of bubbles and the kinetics of the interface between molten steel and liquid slag.
