苏州市辖市6县(市),从1993年开始进行科技创先活动,当年吴江、常熟、吴县3县(市)在国家科委首批评选中获科技先进县(市)称号,后张家港市单独上报也通过评审,于1994年一起公布。1995年国家科委第二批评选时,昆山、太仓两县(市)又获通过,这样苏州市辖6县(市)全部完成了创先任务。无锡市辖锡山、宜兴、江阴3县(市)以及郊区,也全部在国家科委首批评选时通过验收,获科技先进县(市)称号。
