Innovative energy recovery-solutions for the steel industry

  Rising requirements for sustainable and cost-efficient production of metals lead to a growing demand for energy recovery.Therefore SMS Siemag developed several technical solutions to recover the energy from hot off-gas (BOF,EAF) by evaporation cooled ducts or tailored waste heat boiler solutions.Up to 85% of the usually wasted heat can be "harvested",converted into steam and used for other purposes.Fuxin Special Steel has placed an order with us for the engineering and supply of a steam generation plant that uses the off-gas heat at AOD converter and EAF-the world first installation of this kind.One of the latest orders was received by the Chinese steel manufacturer Taiyuan Iron & Steel ( Group) Co.Ltd.( Tisco) contracting SMS Siemag for the planning and supply of an X-Melt(○R) CONARC(○R) furnace unit with energy recovery system for a new long product mill in Taiyuan,North China.A further development is the EAF ecoplants compact boiler.In this boiler,post combustion and heat recovery can be realized within one compactly designed aggregate.Whilst the evaporative cooling is driven by natural circulation,electrical power for pumps can be massively decreased,corrosion is avoided by high wall temperatures and erosion is decreased by an immediate expansion of the duct causing an instant decrease of gas velocity.Beside the innovations in the above mentioned "hardware" components,also IT and Automation solutions can help to decrease the energy consumption.Therefore it was developed the X-pact Energy Advisor,an Energy Monitoring and Management System,which makes the current energy consumption transparent and controllable.As many customers say,the installation of such a system helps a lot to get down the energy consumption and is paid back in a very short time.
