Scallop shell, which is abundant and cheap due to a waste product in seafood industry, is annually disposed ca.200,000 ton in Japan.Here we report several applications for discarded shells as a formaldehyde adsorbent, powerful catalyst for biodiesel production, and so on.Especially, the effect of specific surface area of shell powder on adsorption performance of gaseous formaldehyde, and on catalytic activity in biodiesel production will be demonstrated.The adsorbed amount and catalytic activity were improved with increasing the specific surface area of shell powder.
