The present study focusses on the temporally resolved characterization of a six-hole port fuel injector typically used in small IC engines, with the six holes at the vertices of a regular hexagon. Using high-speed imaging and a phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA), the temporal variation of the spray penetration length, the spray cone angle, the droplet diameter and velocity, are determined axially at 30 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm and 70 mm from the injector tip and also at radial locations therein in a quiescent chamber at atmospheric pressure. The injection pressure is varied from 2 to 6 bar. The instantaneous penetration length is found to increase linearly with time for the given injection pulse and the cone angle is found to remain constant with time. As the injection pressure is increased, the penetration length is found to be higher at any instant. The cone angle remains constant with injection pressure. The radial variation of the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) at any axial location shows a minimum at the centre, indicating a hollow nature of this multi-hole injector spray, unlike a 4- hole injector tested previously at this laboratory. The SMD is found to decrease with pressure. However, the droplet diameter is observed to be nearly constant at a given pressure as we move downstream along the spray, indicating fine atomization. The pulse-to-pulse droplet diameter variation with time is measured, and it is found that the droplet diameter averaged over all the pulses at specific times after start of injection remains constant through the pulse duration as well.
