Massively Parallel Sequencing is revolutionizing almost all of biology and DNA-based forensics is no exception.Compared to the standard forensic STR polymorphic markers genotyped using capillary electrophoresis,sequencing allows better sets of SNP-based markers for individual identification,for inference of phenotype,for estimation of biogeographic ancestry,and for identifying relatively distant relationships among individuals.Sequencing reagents are already commercially available for individual identification and ancestry inference SNPs.The necessary data on reference populations are being assembled for these SNP-based markers and made useful on the freely accessible FROG-kb web site (frog.med.yale.edu).
