Lipopolysaccharides(LPS),the major component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, contribute greatly to the structural integrity of the bacteria, and protect the membrane from certain kinds of chemical attack.LPS comprise three parts:O-antigen,Core oligosaccharides and Lipid A.2-keto-3-deoxyoctulosonate (KDO) is one of the key components within core oligosaccharides, which links lipid A and O-antigen together.Studies showed that inhibition of the KDO biosynthesis led to the inhibition of LPS biosynthesis and bacterial growth.
